Charon Ferryman of the River Styx

Charon, in Greek mythology, is the grim and stoic ferryman of the River Styx, tasked with transporting the souls of the deceased across the dark waters to the underworld. A son of Erebus (Darkness) and Nyx (Night), he is often depicted as an elderly, bearded man clad in a tattered robe, steering his boat with a single oar. Souls seeking passage must pay Charon with an obol, a small coin placed in their mouths or hands by loved ones during burial rites—a tradition reflecting the belief that without payment, the dead would wander the shores of the Styx for eternity. His role underscores the inevitability of death and the transition from the living world to Hades’ realm, where he serves as a somber gatekeeper, indifferent to pleas or bribes beyond his modest fare.
